Dr. Tom Crawford and Dr. Jonathan F. Katz are co-directors of ALTHEUS Sport and Exercise Psychology. Dr. Katz is both a licensed clinical psychologist and a nationally recognized sport psychologist. Dr. Crawford is a nationally recognized expert in human performance. As sport psychologists, they have worked with a wide variety of athletes ranging from juniors to professionals, and have a proven record of success. The Performance Enhancement: Specific training for achieving peak athletic performance. The techniques utilized improve the consistency of athletic performance, help identify performance problems, and speed the learning of new skills. Crisis Intervention: Working with athletes in acute situations in which strong emotional responses interfere with the ability to perform. Team and Individual Assessment: Psychological evaluation for purposes of making selection or screening decisions. Techniques include interviewing, behavioral observation and testing. Prevention and Treatment of Injuries: Treatment of problems due to overuse (for example, reducing anxiety and muscle tension that might aggravate the injury), assisting in the psychological recovery from the trauma associated with a previous injury, and the alteration of an athlete’s tolerance for pain. Education and Training: Seminars and workshops designed for specific needs of the athlete or team. Diagnostic Screening: Evaluation and early detection of psychological and/or substance abuse problems. Program Development: Consultations designed to create a bridge between psychology, athletic programs and athletes. Examples include training of coaching staffs, parents, schools, etc., to help arrive at problem resolution for issues that concern teams and athletes. Family Evaluation and Treatment: Identification of family issues which may have a potentially negative impact on athletic performance. Evaluation and Treatment of Eating Disorders: The intense anguish, potentially severe medical complications and disrupted lives associated with these conditions are assessed and treated. Short- and long-term recovery goals will be presented along with specific strategies developed to help identify and interrupt dysfunctional eating behaviors. Exercise/Rehabilitation Adherence and Addiction: Examination and intervention with regard to increasing physical activity, perceived exertion and/or over-exercising.
